Anyone who thinks that Dokku is remotely comparable to the offering that Heroku provides almost certainly also forgot to setup something like fail2ban or database backups. Yes, it definitely does help ease the pain, but IMO is not in the same category as actual PaaS solutions.
There is just so much more to maintaining server infrastructure that most people don't see, and that's where services like Heroku shine. Even managing self-hosted PaaS software is hard and not a complete replacement for just paying another company to handle it for you.
